Maine clinics given high marks by fedsPORTLAND, Maine -- A federal agency is giving Maine high marks for how it responded to last year's sharp increase in methadone-related drug deaths. The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment assessed the state's response at the request of the Maine Office of Substance Abuse.
The study concludes that Maine officials responded by educating medical providers, addicts and the public; collected data on the problem and increased oversight and monitoring of clinics. It also says the state set up a network of groups to address the problem.
The government report says the Maine Office of Substance Abuse "led a campaign that appears to be a model strategy for responding to a public crisis."
More than a quarter of last year's 126 overdose deaths in Maine involved methadone. Maine figures show that for the first six months of this year, there were 46 accidental drug overdoses, 14 of which were related to methadone.
